Services for People Affected by Harmful Sexual Behaviour

Overview

Picture
WellStop is increasingly concerned about the need to have holistic services for clients and families.

We are aware there are amazing agencies in our region providing services to survivors. WellStop absolutely supports these agencies and works closely with many of them. However, we are also aware that many communities don’t have services like these, so in some cases we have tried to fill the gaps.

In Taranaki the survivor agency that merged with WellStop, the Taranaki Safer Centre, provided both survivor services and HSB services, so WellStop has continued to do the same in that area.

In the Ruapehu district (Taumaranui, Taihape), and in Wairoa, WellStop successfully tendered for the Sexual Violence Crisis Support Services and hope to build a range of services to assist those communities to deal with sexual abuse.

WellStop acknowledges that there is an uncomfortable fit for most survivor agencies when clients who have engaged in concerning or harmful sexual behaviour approach them to deal with their own abuse issues.

Many partners, parents and family members of those who have sexually harmed others also find that the experience of having a member of their family engage in harmful sexual behaviour can bring up earlier experiences of sexual abuse.

Additionally, where a child in a family has sexually harmed another child, it is much easier for families to turn to one agency for support.

For all of these reasons WellStop has become an ACC supplier and provider for sensitive claims (sexual abuse counselling).
